Circle lenses, a type of colored contacts imported from Asia that make the wearer look as though they have enlarged eyes, are set to be one of the New Year’s biggest beauty trends, having first risen to popularity four years ago.

However, doctors have warned that the cosmetic lenses, which cover up the whites of the eyes in order to make the irises appear larger, can cause serious infection and even blindness.

In 2010, F.D.A. spokeswoman Karen Riley told the Bew York Times that consumers 'risk significant eye injuries — even blindness' when they buy lenses without a valid prescription or assistance from an eyecare professional. But it seems that the health risks involved with wearing the quirky contact lenses haven't stopped them from making a return to popularity

Designers have come up with an eco-friendly alternative to the traditional hairdryer - a pair of revolutionary gloves made from hi-tech microfibres.

The 'Hair Drying Gloves' look just like ordinary gloves and their makers claim they dry wet hair twice as fast as the traditional bathroom towel.

The microfibres in the gloves are apparently specifically designed to absorb the water and leave hair completely dry; they even work without removing styling products such as hair gel and hairspray

Blue village.

Mała hiszpańska wioska stała się nagle celem wizyt tysięcy turystów. A wszystko to za sprawą Smurfów.

A tiny Spanish village that became famous after it was painted blue for a promotion is set to become home to the world's first Smurf theme park.

The traditional Andalucian village was once white-washed, but locals agreed to the unusual colour change in 2011 when approached by Sony about the release of The Smurfs in 3D movie.

The PR stunt involved painting all the houses in a Spanish village blue and made the village such an unexpected tourist destination that villagers voted to keep the unusual house colour.

Najpiękniejsze wystawy świąteczne w Londynie.

Christmas shopping in central London in mid December is not for the faint-hearted.

Wind, rain, angry customers, queues and general confusion are just a few of the issues that shoppers have to deal with when trying to find the perfect present in one of the capital's department stores.

But the biggest retailers do have their perks - one of the main ones being the beautiful window displays they build every year.

From Selfridges and Harvey Nichols to Harrods and Fenwick, the outside of every building is decorated with festive themes in a competition to create the biggest wow factor.

This year, Father Christmas, multiple penguins, the ballet and even the iconic London black taxi have all featured in the festive scenes.

The golden goose at Selfridges took so long to create that the designer managed to work her way through ten audio books while building it....

He was touring the private 40-acre site with ecology expert Professor Mick Crawley and asked him whether the fungi is edible.

Saving nearly-frozen toddler would be 'absolute miracle'

Doctors in southern Poland are working to save a 2-year-old boy who was found unconscious after spending a frigid night outdoors, wearing only socks and a pajama top.
Janusz Skalski, a doctor at the children's hospital in Krakow, said Tuesday that the boy's body temperature was 12 degrees Celsius and his heart was beating once every few dozen seconds when he was brought in on Sunday.
Skalski said the child's temperature has been raised to 36 degrees Celsius -- nearly normal -- and a regular heartbeat has been restored, but the child's condition remains to be seen. He is still attached to a respirator, but his kidneys, liver, intestines and lungs are working properly.

Britain now has almost as many Poles as KRAKOW...

W Wielkiej Brytanii mieszka już tylu Polaków, co w Krakowie pisze dzisiejsze Daily Mail.

Britain is now home to 1.3 million eastern Europeans, an international study has revealed.

More than a quarter of the five million foreigners living in the UK are from the 10 eastern bloc countries which joined the EU in 2004 – sparking the biggest immigration surge in British history.

Poles are the biggest group of foreigners in the country – with some 679,000 having set up home in Britain, according to the respected Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.

It means there are almost as many Poles in the UK as there are in the country's second city of Krakow - home to 750,000 people.

The Christmas market in Krakow is a regular feature of the city’s festive season. Traditionally, it starts in the last week of November and lasts through December 26th at least. Sometimes the organizers venture to prolong the Xmas market to January 6th, the Epiphany festival. Thus the festive shopping event may somewhat extend Christmastime in Krakow, long enough anyway - in Poland the Yuletide officially begins on December 24th and continues till February 2nd.

E-cigarettes 'contain 10 TIMES more cancer-causing chemicals than regular cigarettes'

E-cigarettes contain 10 times the level of cancer-causing agents as regular tobacco.

Health experts in Japan discovered high levels of chemicals including formaldehyde and acetaldehyde in the vapour produced by several types of e-cigarette liquid.

The latest findings will come as a blow to those in favour of the electronic devices, heralded as safer than regular cigarettes.

The devices, which are becoming increasingly popular around the world, particularly among young people, function by heating flavoured liquid, which often contains nicotine, into a vapour that is inhaled, much like traditional cigarettes but without the smoke.

To nie jest kraj dla Puchatka czyli Winnie the Pooh banned from being playground logo.

Chodzenie bez majtek i brak płci- takie poważne zarzuty postawiono Kubusiowi Puchatkowi w Tuszynie, gdzie miejscowym radnym nie spodobał się projekt nazwania placu zabaw dla dzieci jego imieniem.
Miś o Bardzo Małym Rozumku bez płci i bielizny, okazał się niemal tak groźny dla umysłów przedszkolaków, jak fioletowy Teletubiś Tinky Winky z damską torebką lub para osiołków w zoo, co się kochały na oczach zwiedzających.
Aby wpaść na taki pomysł potrzeba było doprawdy tęgiej głowy i jaka troska o najmłodszych! ( Kubuś Puchatek nie budzi zgorszenia nawet w krajach arabskich https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qxU-79STOMg )
Widać Tuszyn to kraina szczęśliwości i raj na ziemi, gdzie są wspaniałe drogi, nieskażona przyroda, nie ma bezrobocia a wszyscy obywatele opływają w dostatki, skoro radni na posiedzeniu komisji budżetowej zajmują się takimi problemami i wystawiają nasz kraj na pośmiewisko.
Nie obyło się też bez ataków na A.A. Milne autora książek o przygodach misia.

W Polsce, póki co, wykorzystanie internetu podczas lekcji nie jest jeszcze powszechne i choć wiele się słyszy o elektronicznych podręcznikach, to daleko nam do ich wprowadzenia na szeroka skalę. Tymczasem w Wielkiej Brytanii po latach fascynacji internetem, planuje się powrót do tradycyjnych podręczników na lekcji.

Ministers will today urge schools to bring back traditional textbooks to end a growing reliance on worksheets and the internet.

They will say that an ‘anti-textbook ethos’ has contributed to England’s slide in international rankings of pupils’ performance in key academic subjects.

In a speech to the Publishers Association, School Reform Minister Nick Gibb will call on all schools – both primary and secondary – to reintroduce good quality textbooks in most subjects.

An arachnophobe's nightmare.

Anni-Frid Lyngstad (Frida)

15 listopada 1945 r. w małej norweskiej wiosce w pobliżu Narwiku urodziła się Anni-Frid Lyngstad, przyszła członkini grupy ABBA. Nie miała łatwego dzieciństwa. Ojciec, żonaty podoficer Wehrmachtu, po ewakuacji wojsk hitlerowskich z Norwegii wrócił do Niemiec. Matka zmarła dwa lata później z powodu niewydolności nerek. Wychowaniem dziewczynki zajmowała się babcia, z którą Anni-Frid wyjechała do Szwecji.

Wczoraj otwarto w Holandii niezwykłą ścieżkę rowerową, której twórców zainspirował obraz "Gwiaździsta noc" Van Gogh'a.
An artist in the Ntherlands has created an incredibly beautiful tribute to Vincent van Gogh -- an illuminated bike path that glows in the dark.

Inspired by the famed Dutch painter's "Starry Night" work, artist Daan Roosegaarde teamed up with Heijmans Infrastructure to create the 1-kilometer-long Van Gogh Roosegaarde cycle path, which opened in the city of Eindhoven on November 13.

The path is illuminated by thousands of twinkling stones that feature glow-in-the-dark technology and solar-powered LED lights.

Dances With Wolves

Dziś westerny już nie w modzie i chyba nikt już ich nie produkuje, a szkoda, bo świat dzikiego zachodu miał swój urok. Indianie, rewolwerowcy, dzielny szeryf juz nikogo nie interesują.
Chyba ostatnim westernem, który obejrzałam z zainteresowaniem był "Tańczący z wilkami". Premiera filmu odbyła się 9 listopada 1990 roku. Tytuł Dances With Wolves to tak naprawdę "Tańce z wilkami". Film wyreżyserował Kevin Costner, który wystąpił także w roli głównej.
"Tańczący z wilkami"opowiada o amerykańskim oficerze, który przystaje do Indian, poznaje ich język i obyczaje i bierze za żonę kobietę z plemienia Siouxów.
Western odniósł ogromny sukces i otrzymał siedem Oskarów, między innymi za najlepszą reżyserię i muzykę.

Rok temu w Warszawie na Torwarze wystąpiła kanadyjska grupa Nickelback.
Zespół powstał w 1995 roku i już w latach 90-tych stał się popularny w rodzinnej Kanadzie a kilka lat później także w Europie.
Ciekawa jest historia nazwy grupy. Słowo NICKEL to w języku potocznym pięciocentowa moneta. Zwrot "Here is your nickel back" czyli "oto pańska reszta" tak utkwił w głowie jednego z członków zespołu, który wcześniej pracował w barze szybkiej obsługi, że zaproponował go jako nazwę grupy.
Mnie zespół Nickelback kojarzy się przede wszystkim z balladą How you remind me.

Bohemian Rhapsody

31 października 1975 roku ukazał się singiel Bohemian Rhapsody grupy Queen, który szybko zdobył popularność i został uznany przez BPI za 'Najlepszy singel ostatnich 25 lat'.
Bohemian Rhapsody to utwór trudny, trwa ponad 5 minut, ale nie da się być wobec tej muzyki obojętnym. Przez wiele lat słuchacze łamali sobie głowę, co tak właściwie twórca chciał przez to powiedzieć i tworzyli na ten temat najprzeróżniejsze teorie.
Jak tu się nie zastanawiać, skoro w tekście Bohemian Rhapsody pojawiają się (podaję za wikipedią):

Scaramouche – postać komiczna Commedia dell Arte, przedstawiająca pochodzącego z Neapolu żołnierza-samochwałę; również filmy z 1923 i 1952 roku o tym tytule.
fandango – hiszpański taniec ludowy.
Figaro (fr.. fryzjer) to m.in postać lokaja hrabiego Almavivy z oper Wesele Figara i Cyrulik sewilski oraz imię postaci kota z filmów Disneya
Galileo – włoski astronom Galileusz (stał się symbolem walki religii z postępem nauki); ale być może też "Galilejczyk", czyli Jezus Chrystus
Belzebub - jedno z biblijnych określeń szatana

Maple syrup.

Syrop klonowy to produkt kojarzony z Kanadą. Produkuje się go na skalę przemysłową w prowincji Quebec a także w Kolorado i Nebrasce w USA. Syrop zawiera wiele witamin i składników mineralnych i jest mniej kaloryczny od miodu. Do wyprodukowania jednego litra syropu potrzeba aż 40 litrów soku z drzew klonowych.

Sposób produkcji syropu Europejczycy poznali dzięki zamieszkującym Kanadę Indianom.

Dylan Thomas (1914-1953)

27 października 1914 r. w Swansea (Walia) urodził się poeta Dylan Thomas. Jego tata, nauczyciel literatury angielskiej, zaczął mu czytać wiersze kiedy malec miał 2 lata. Jako czterolatek chłopiec potrafił już recytować Szekspira, a jako ośmiolatek sam zaczął tworzyć. Jego wiersze ukazały się drukiem w roku 1933.
Nie chcę tu streszczać życiorysu poety.
Największe wrażenie zrobiła na mnie informacja:
Dylan Thomas wywarł ogromny wpływ na kolejne pokolenia poetów. W szczególności na poetę-śpiewaka Roberta Zimmermana, który imienia Thomasa używał jako swego pseudonimu artystycznego, a potem dokonał formalnej zmiany nazwiska na Bob Dylan.

Beyonce powinna się mieć na baczności, bo ma już konkurentkę i to znacznie młodszą od siebie.
Bobbi Boyden, która brawurowo tańczyła w rytm piosenki "Single Ladies" podczas konkursu piękności, podbiła serca widzów i jurorów. Nie byłoby w tym nic dziwnego, gdyby nie fakt , że Bobby ma zaledwie 19 miesięcy, nie potrafi jeszcze mówić i dopiero 5 miesięcy temu nauczyła się chodzić.
