Dinant - where the saxophone was invented.

Dinant to piękne belgijskie miasto, w którym urodził się wynalazca saxofonu.
The saxophone was invented by a Belgian, Antoine-Joseph (Adolphe) Sax, born on November 6, 1814 in Dinant. His father, Charles was an expert maker of musical instruments. As a child he learned to make instruments in his father's shop. His father's passion for creating instruments had such a strong influence on him that by the age of six, Sax had already become an expert as well. He produced some of the finest specimens of flutes, clarinets, and other instruments. He also learned to play the instruments because he had to test them when he made them. During his youth, Adolphe Sax studied the clarinet and the flute at the Brussels Conservatory..... White rainbows.

Biała tęcza to niezwykle rzadkie zjawisko.

They've shown up sporadically over active lava flows in Hawaii, at the base of Yosemite Falls in California during the spring snow melt, and in the cloud forests of Costa Rica when the Christmas winds blow in clouds of mist from late December through early February. They've also occasionally been seen in various places around the globe in the night sky during a rain shower around the time of the full moon.

How to cheat in exams.

Students may be breaking up for school this week but that doesn't mean that their Christmas break will be study-free.
With January exams on the horizon, it seems there's no end to the lengths students will go to achieve grades without actually spending their Christmas break revising.
From equations disguised as nail art to hints hidden under plasters, these cheating hacks shared by milkha prove students don't miss a trick when it comes to cheating.
While they may seem like an easy way out, these methods are not recommended as they constitute as an immediate disqualification

The city of 350 dwarves.

Miasto, w którym mieszka 350 krasnali to oczywiście nasz Wrocław, o którym pisze Daily Mail.
Most cities are famous for something but Wroclaw in Poland has a particularly quirky trademark.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XzgKPjGy4v4
The city is home to 163 small bronze dwarves - and that's just the official figure.
Some think there may be as many as 350 of the cheeky foot-tall dwarf statues dotted round the city.
Called 'krasnale' in Polish, the dwarves first appeared on the streets of Wroclaw in 2005.

My little pony... burger.

Holenderska restauracja serwuje burgery z końskiego mięsa pod wdzięczną nazwą "My Little Pony".
A restaurant in the Netherlands has become famous for serving up a dish called the 'My Little Pony Burger' - but it's not just a creative name.
The burger is actually made from real horse meat.
Dutch restaurant Food Guerilla gets the strange delicacies from a quirky food truck called Keuken van het Ongewenst Dier - or the 'Unwanted Animal Kitchen'.
The patties are all made from the butchered meat of ageing ponies at nearby amusement park Slagharen.

Japanese socks.

If we’re going to look at socks, we should start with the traditional tabi. Tabi 足袋 are ankle high and recognizable by their split toe design and hook fastenings. The split between the big toe and the other toes means they are suitable to wear with traditional Japanese footwear such as geta and zori that resemble sandals with a strap that attaches to the sole between the toes. Traditional tabi are made of stiffer material than socks. This is good since it provides some protection for your feet (is it just my weird feet or are zori super painful to wear?).

The healthiest Christmas dinners

W rankingu najzdrowszych posiłków świątecznych nasze polskie, tradycyjne, wigilijne dania zajęły pierwsze miejsce.

If you want a healthy Christmas dinner this year, you'll have to head to Poland, a dietitian has revealed.
Christina Merryfield, lead dietitian at Bupa's Cromwell Hospital in London, has ranked the world's traditional dinners against each other - and the UK and US don't come off well.
The countries rank right at the bottom of the global leaderboard of the world's healthiest Christmas meals for their traditional, and very fatty, turkey dinners.
Poland meanwhile has the world's healthiest Christmas meal, as a traditional dinner there is borscht - a red beetroot soup - and carp.

Advantages of global warming.

While the main drink of choice in Edinburgh may currently be whiskey, it seems that the city could soon be one of the best places for a glass of white wine.
A new study suggests that changing weather patterns in the UK could see the country become a major wine producer by the turn of the century.
Unlikely areas, including Peckham in south London, and Milton Keynes, could be ideal areas for sauvignon blanc and chardonnay by as early as 2100.

Sad country.

" The European country that loves being sad" - przeczytałam nagłówek na stronie BBC i od razu pomyślałam o Polsce.
In Portugal, no one tells you to have a nice day. No one particularly cares if you have a nice day, because chances are they’re not having a nice day either. If you ask a Portuguese person how they’re doing, the most enthusiastic reply you can expect is mais ou menos (so so).
Portugal’s culture of melancholy is hard to miss. You see it etched on people’s sombre expressions – this is no Thailand, known as the Land of Smiles – and even in the statues that occupy prime real estate in Lisbon’s public squares. In most countries, the men (and it’s almost always men) honoured in such places are macho generals. In Portugal, it’s moody poets.

Digital currency.

Changing money is one of the more irksome tasks we have to tackle before going on holiday - but Sweden might soon be making it much smoother.
Riksbank, the world's oldest central bank, has announced that it's exploring the concept of a 'digital currency' to accompany its Swedish kroner notes, which could ultimately save tourists a trip to the currency exchange desk.
Enabling people to purchase kroner online would be similar, but not the same, as the way virtual currency Bitcoin is already used by travellers to pay for things like flights and hotels.

The world's most extreme sports

  • skyaking
  • volcano snowboarding
  • glacier body boarding
  • cliff diving
  • cliff camping
  • storm chasing
Najbardziej zaintrygowała mnie dyscyplina o nazwie extreme ironing czyli ekstremalne prasowanie.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j1y4rsEVzYo
Invented by a bored 17-year-old rock climber, Canadian Kevin Krupitzer, extreme ironing is fairly self-explanatory when you see it in action.
The acutely random hobby has led him to scale a 120ft rock in Arizona's Queen Creek Canyon, known as the Totem Pole, with an ironing board strapped to his back.
Extreme ironing has since been embraced by copycats around the world - with stuntmen taking their laundry accoutrements under the British sea, for example, and to Japan's frozen Lake Hibar.

Most common surnames.

My mamy Kowalskich i Nowaków, a w Wielkiej Brytanii na pierwszym miejscu Smith. Miejsce drugie i srebrny medal otrzymuje Jones, a trzeci na podium wchodzi Williams.
Ciekawy artykuł o nazwiskach w Wielkiej Brytanii i Irlandii zamieszcza BBC.

"Some surnames have origins that are occupational - obvious examples are Smith and Baker; less obvious ones are Beadle, Rutter, and Baxter," Prof Coates said.
"Other names can be linked to a place, for example Hill or Green, which relates to a village green.
"Surnames which are 'patronymic' are those which originally enshrined the father's name - such as Jackson, or Jenkinson.
"There are also names where the origin describes the original bearer such as Brown, Short, or Thin - though Short may in fact be an ironic 'nickname' surname for a tall person."

The moon doesn't get much bigger and brighter than this.
On Monday, sky gazers across the world will be treated to a so-called supermoon – the closest full moon of the year.
It will be closer to the planet than it has been since 1948, and this month's full moon is set to be the biggest supermoon in living memory.
The once-in-a-lifetime sight takes place on the 14th of the month when the full moon will appear 14 per cent larger and 30 per cent brighter than normal.

The story starts 15 years ago with a photo from my window. I kept this technique and photos away from public as I wanted to show it to the World first. And what a better way to do it with the greatest city in the World, New York!
Some of the photos are on film, but most of them are digital, but it is a macro photography technique, not a Photoshop, that is why it has flaws in sharpness and a lot of blurs.

Cullinan Diamond.

9 listopada 1907 roku, król Wielkiej Brytanii Edward VII otrzymał w prezencie na swoje 66 urodziny największy diament świata.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9RsUpa-hcYE
On January 26, 1905, mine superintendent Frederick Wells made an unusual find in Gauteng, South Africa.
Only 9 meters from the surface was a large, blue-white diamond, which he extracted using a pocket knife and took to the mine office to be weighed and inspected.
The stone tipped the scales at 3,106 carats (621.35 grams), making it the largest diamond ever found.
It was named the Cullinan after Sir Thomas Cullinan, the owner of the diamond mine in which it was found.Amsterdam-based company I. J. Asscher and Co cut the diamond. The two resulting stones, weighing 1,977ct and 1,040ct, were cleaved into nine major stones, 96 brilliants and 9.5 carats of unpolished pieces.
The two main stones, Cullinan I (The Great Star of Africa) and Cullinan II (The Lesser Star of Africa) were given to King Edward VII. Both currently reside in the Tower of London as part of the Crown Jewels.

Snow grains?

Płatki śniegu to snowflakes, śnieg z deszczem to sleet albo ice pellets, a grad to hail. Krupa śnieżna to najprawdopodobniej snow grains ( ziarnisty śnieg ).

Oto definicją:
Snow grains are small grains of ice. They do not produce much accumulation and are the solid equivalent to drizzle.(http://www.theweatherprediction.com/preciptypes/ )

All Saints'Day in the UK

All Saints Day, 1 November, is when Catholics remember the saints and their own deceased family and friends.
In Poland, where it is a public holiday, people light candles at their relatives' graves.
Gunnersbury Cemetery in west London contains about 1,600 graves belonging to Poles or people of Polish origin, including many war veterans.
Volunteers from the Poland Street association are in attendance; about 100 people have turned up to sweep away leaves and light candles contained in glass lanterns, or znicze.

METALLICA.

28 października 1981, czyli 35  lat temu,  powstał zespół Metallica.
Metallica, one of the biggest selling acts in American history, were born on October 28, 1981 when drummer Lars Ulrich and guitar player/singer James Hetfield got together via Ulrich’s LA Recycler newspaper ad. Soon, the two had recruited Hetfield’s friend and housemate Ron McGovney to play bass, Dave Mustaine to play lead guitar, and taken the name Metallica after a suggestion from Bay Area metal scene friend Ron Quintana. Their ascent was to be relatively quick, driven by sheer work-rate, effort and a rare musical chemistry. After hitting the opener’s circuit in LA (where they supported the likes of Saxon) they recorded their first ever demo No Life ‘Til Leather.

Wax on apples.

Piękne, błyszczące jabłka kupowane w sklepach zawdzięczają swój blask warstwie wosku, która chroni je przed zepsuciem. Co robić aby się go pozbyć? Wyczerpująco na ten temat pisze The SUN.

Shop bought apples are covered in wax to keep them shiny during their long journey from the apple orchard to the supermarket.
It may be seriously off-putting to some people, but the wax used to cover the apples is completely natural and often made from beetle mucus which the creatures use to cover and protect its eggs.
Although it’s completely safe to eat, it is easy to scrub off if you don’t want to consume it
This video from Little Things: DIY shows just how much wax is really on the delicious fruit:

The world's smallest museum.

A Yorkshire village has created what could be the world's smallest museum by transforming a disused phone box.
The attraction in Warley, near Halifax, only has enough room for one visitor at a time.
But despite the limitations of space, it features etched glass, old photographs and a selection of personal items that tell the history of the village.

Halloween night in Dracula's Castle.

Coś dla odważnych entuzjastów obchodzenia Halloween. Zamek Drakuli oferuje noclegi w trumnach i inne mrożące krew w żyłach atrakcje.
In Bram Stoker's famous novel, Dracula, the protagonist finds himself desperate to escape the bloodthirsty vampire's lair - but would you brave it all and spend a night at the very same castle?
On October 31, the night of Halloween, Bran Castle in Transylvania - the inspiration for Count Dracula's home - will welcome two overnight guests, marking the first time since 1948 that anyone has slept in the 15th century fortress.
As part of a promotion by home-sharing website, Airbnb, guests will be wined and dined, then left alone to lie down in red velvet-trimmed coffins just as Dracula did in Stoker's horror novel that popularized the legend.

The Times They Are a-Changin'

Kto by pomyślał, że Bob Dylan zostanie kiedyś  laureatem Nagrody Nobla https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V3eRTJSV0lo
ale czas, czas wszystko zmienia....

Come gather 'round people where ever you roam

And admit that the waters around you have grown
And accept it that soon you'll be drenched to the bone
If your time to you is worth savin'
Then you better start swimmin' or you'll sink like a stone,
For the times they are a' changin'!

Pimples - to squeeze or not to squeeze?

National Poetry Day

"There are millions of talented poets out there and it’s about time they got some recognition for their work. They shouldn’t be embarrassed about reading their work out aloud. I want people to read poetry on the bus on their way to work, in the street, in school and in the pub."

Co się robi  tego dnia?  Po prostu czyta poezję -  w autobusie, w szkole, w pracy, w pubie
W tegoroczne obchody włączył się czynnie sam Książę Walii,

Dangerous hornets.

Azjatyckie szerszenie pojawiły się w Wielkiej Brytanii. Stanowią wielkie zagrożenie dla pszczół.

A pumpkin-sized Asian hornets' nest has been discovered in the UK just one month after the killer insects were first spotted on British soil.
The nest was found at the top of a 55ft conifer tree in Tetbury, Gloucestershire, close to where the insects were first seen.
They have since been spotted in six different locations, raising concerns about the threat to Britain's honey bee population.

The Flintstones was a parody on modern suburban life, set in the Stone Age. The characters in the cartoon series all behaved and spoke in a contemporary manner, though they lived in the prehistoric city of Bedrock. Fred worked as operator of a dinosaur-powered crane at Rock Hard & Quarry Cave Construction Co. (slogan: "Own Your Own Cave and Be Secure").
