Britain is now home to 1.3 million eastern Europeans, an international study has revealed.
More than a quarter of the five million foreigners living in the UK are from the 10 eastern bloc countries which joined the EU in 2004 – sparking the biggest immigration surge in British history.
Poles are the biggest group of foreigners in the country – with some 679,000 having set up home in Britain, according to the respected Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.
It means there are almost as many Poles in the UK as there are in the country's second city of Krakow - home to 750,000 people.
