Banana with an edible SKIN

Z serii " Czego to Japończycy nie wymyślą?" . Tym razem wymyślili banany z jadalną skórką. Szkoda tylko, że trudno je kupić i nie są tanie....

Farmers in Japan have called on the ancient DNA of a specially bred banana, to create a remarkable version of the fruit with a totally edible skin.

The technique recreates conditions present at the end of the ice age around 20,000 years ago, when plants would emerge from harsh winter temperatures to grow.

Bananas typically take two years to grow large enough for consumption, but the method lowers that time to just four months.

However, the innovation doesn't come cheap, with only 10 of the rare sweet treats going on sale each week at an eye-watering 648 yen (£4.20 / $5.70).

Snow window painter.

W dawnych czasach, kiedy jeszcze nie było globalnego ocieplenia, a domy często nie były należycie ogrzewane, zimą można było podziwiać piękne kwiaty na szybach - dzieło mrozu. Być może to zjawisko zainspirowało pewnego artystę do tworzenia śnieżnych obrazów .

An artist has been showing off how he creates spectacular "snow window" paintings.

Tom Baker, who is from Sandhurst in Berkshire, spends his December travelling around the country creating spectacular displays.

He uses white snow spray and a variety of tools to wow his customers, working up to 19 hours a day in the run up to Christmas.

His clients vary from private home owners, to large companies and even celebrities.

Najpiękniejszą drogę na świecie znajdziecie w Południowej Afryce, jak informuje BBC . Chapman's Peak Drive ma 9 kilometrów długości i biegnie wzdłuż wybrzeża Atlantyku.
Carved out of the west-facing cliffs, Chappies, as it’s known by locals, was constructed between 1915 and 1922 using convict labour. Although named after John Chapman, the skipper of an English ship who visited the area in 1607, the real hero of Chapman’s Peak Drive is Sir Nicolas Frederick de Waal, the first administrator of the Cape Province, who tenaciously pursued the idea of a road even when engineers said it couldn’t be done.

First traffic lights

10 grudnia 1868 roku w Londynie uruchomiono pierwszą na świecie uliczną sygnalizację świetlną. Jej konstruktorem był inżynier kolejnictwa J.P. Knight. Światła były uruchamiane ręcznie, a energii dostarczała lampa gazowa. Niestety już na początku stycznia doszło do wybuchu gazu.

THE FIRST traffic signal was invented by J P Knight, a railway signalling engineer. It was installed outside the Houses of Parliament in 1868 and looked like any railway signal of the time, with waving semaphore arms and red-green lamps, operated by gas, for night use. Unfortunately it exploded, killing a policeman. The accident discouraged further development until the era of the internal combustion engine.

Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2017

Wczoraj obejrzałam finał dziecięcego konkursu piosenki Eurowizji. Nie jestem fanką tego widowiska, a telewizor włączyłam przez przypadek i niestety przegapiłam występ naszej reprezentantki.
Spośród wszystkich uczestników moją największą sympatię wzbudził chłopiec z Malty Gianluca Cilia - ładny głos, wdzięk i sympatyczna nieskomplikowana piosenka ( w końcu to konkurs dla dzieci).
Okazuje się, że jak na dziesięciolatka Gianluca ma już spore osiągnięcia. Mam nadzieję, że jeszcze kiedyś o nim usłyszymy.

Eton students banned from using electronic devices at night.

Władze Eton College zakazały swoim wychowankom używania urządzeń elektronicznych po godzinie 21.30. Powodem jest troska o dobry sen uczniów oraz zapobieganie uzależnieniu od mediów społecznościowych.
Eton College to jedna z najstarszych elitarnych angielskich szkół dla chłopców (powstała w XV wieku). Uczniowie zakwaterowani sa w internacie, a za rok nauki trzeba płacić ponad 38 tysięcy funtów.

Pupils at Eton College have been banned from using smartphones, laptops and tablets in their rooms after bedtime because of fears their addiction to social media is leaving them sleep-deprived.

The £38,700-a-year boarding school has told all 13-year-olds to hand over their electronic devices to their housemasters before they go to bed at 9.30 pm.

The measure was introduced by head master Simon Henderson, who said lost sleep could harm pupil’s ability to concentrate in lessons and, damage academic performance.

The French capital topped the table of 100 of the globe's most cultured and fashionable places with London still managing to beat stylish contenders from everywhere else on the planet.

The wide-ranging list looked at factors from architectural beauty to accessibility to how each place was perceived by those who lived, worked or visited.Cleanliness, culture and style were also included with the scores provided by fashion experts, architects and others

With the exception of New York, every other city in the top ten was in Europe with Italy providing four of them and France two - Paris and Bordeaux. Vienna came third and Barcelona sixth.

The only other British cities to feature in the full list of 100 - compiled by fashion app Zalando - were Edinburgh at 38 and Brighton at 69 while Tokyo was the only non-European or American city in the top 30.

Alaska Day.

Dziś w Stanach Zjednoczonych obchodzony jest Dzień Alaski.

The Alaska Day festival is annually celebrated in the city of Sitka, Alaska. The three-day festival usually involves: a mayor’s proclamation; a costume ball featuring period costumes; dance performances; races; a concert; an army band; an air-sea rescue demonstration; an open house on board a coast guard cutter or naval vessel; and tea at the Pioneer’s Home.

On Alaska Day many people involved in the armed forces join in a memorial service at the Sitka National Cemetery and in a parade throughout the city’s business district. School bands, marching units and costumed participants are among the many people who participate in the parade. A re-enactment of the 1867 ceremony also occurs on this day – it involves the lowering of the Russian flag and the raising of the United States flag on top of Castle Hill, accompanied by ceremonial music.

O wczorajszym zwycięstwie w meczu z Czarnogórą można sobie poczytać po angielsku. Polecam!

Poland sealed their first World Cup spot since the 2006 tournament after an early onslaught and a late flourish, including a goal from the excellent Robert Lewandowski, gave them a 4-2 home win over Montenegro on Sunday.

The result left Poland top of Group E with 25 points from 10 games, five ahead of second-placed Denmark who sealed a playoff berth after a 1-1 home draw with Romania.

GRAMA TO NIE DRAMA.

Czy czytaliście kiedyś dla przyjemności książkę do gramatyki? Pewnie pomyślicie, że zwariowałam, ale to jest możliwe. Kiedy kilka dni temu zobaczyłam na Facebooku informację o tym, że Arlena Witt wydała książkę nie wahałam się ani sekundy. W ciągu pierwszej godziny sprzedano ponad 800 egzemplarzy. Serwer był tak mocno szturmowany przez fanów Arleny, że na złożenie zamówienia trzeba było czekać ponad 20 minut. W końcu udało mi się i moje zamówienie zarejestrowano pod numerem 1051. Wczoraj listonosz dostarczył mi przesyłkę (załapałam się na egzemplarz z autografem) i oto moje pierwsze wrażenia.

Jeśli do tej pory mieliście do czynienia z podręcznikami, które zawiłości gramatyki angielskiej tłumaczą w sposób: " Forma would w grupie werbalnej mającej aspekt Perfect Continuous występuje tylko w zdaniach złożonych" , to w tym opracowaniu tego nie znajdziecie. Arlena pisze w sposób prosty i zabawny, że zrozumiałby ją nawet Kubuś Puchatek, który był misiem o bardzo małym rozumku i długie słowa sprawiały mu trudność. Wplata w tekst dowcipy, cytaty z filmów i piosenek i udowadnia, że gramatyka wcale nie musi być nudna.
Dla kogo właściwe jest ta książka? Na pewno nie dla wszystkich. Moim zdaniem dla osób powyżej 15-tego roku życia, czyli minimum licealistów lub trzecioklasistów gimnazjum. Sięgać będą po nią nauczyciele poszukujący inspiracji. Już po przeczytaniu wstępu doszłam do wniosku, że będę teraz wymagać od uczniów aby jak najwięcej pisali w zeszytach, bo im więcej piszemy, tym więcej zapamiętujemy.
Tą książką nie można się dzielić i nie powinno się jej nikomu pożyczać i to jest chyba jedyna jej wada. To oczywiście moje prywatne zdanie. Dlaczego nie? Bo jest jak "dwa w jednym" czyli podręcznik z ćwiczeniówką. Jest tu miejsce na rozwiązywanie zadań, na robienie notatek, do czego Autorka zachęca. Jeśli ktoś wykaże się systematycznością i determinacją i "przerobi" wszystkie rozdziały (jest ich 100), to po zakończeniu pracy będzie w posiadaniu czegoś w rodzaju pamiętnika, w którym będą spisane jego potyczki z gramatyką angielską. Nie wyobrażam sobie aby coś tak osobistego udostępniać innej osobie.
Książka jest warta swojej ceny i atrakcyjna pod względem graficznym ( 99 PLN za dwa tomy, płacąc tę kwotę fundujesz jeden ciepły posiłek w ramach programu Pajacyk, przesyłka jest bezpłatna). I jeszcze jedna uwaga: książki nie ma w księgarniach, można ją kupić wyłącznie przez internet http://arlena.altenberg.pl/

A Danube cruise.

Danube - po polsku Dunaj, to druga co do wielkości rzeka Europy. Ma 1800 kilometrów długości i przepływa przez 10 państw.

The Danube flows nearly 1,800 miles from the Black Forest to the Black Sea, through ten countries and four capital cities – Vienna, Bratislava, Budapest and Belgrade. On its banks there are the marks of thousands of years of history, millions if you include rock formations such as the dramatic Iron Gates Gorges, wending for 80 miles and forming part of the border between Serbia and Romania.

Wrong trousers pupils.

Kilkanaście lat temu próby wprowadzenia mundurków w polskich szkołach

zakończyły się niepowodzeniem. Tymczasem w Wielkiej Brytanii można nie być wpuszczonym do szkoły z powodu nieodpowiednich spodni. Z pewnością polskim uczniom bardzo by się to spodobało - mam klasówkę, zakładam spodnie w niewłaściwym odcieniu szarości !
Pupils were lined up at the gates of a secondary school while their trousers were checked to see if they were the right shade of grey - with some failing the inspection and being sent home.

Kepier School in Houghton-le-Spring has defended the move, which it said was because it valued "consistency".

Parents have been told that only clothes of a particular colour and bought from one supplier are allowed.

Several pupils were sent home, with others barred from classes.

White koala

W Zoo w Queensland w Australii pojawił się biały miś koala. To niezwykle rzadki przypadek i na wolności malec miałby niewielkie szanse na przeżycie. Maluszek płci żeńskiej nie ma jeszcze imienia. Propozycje można zgłaszać na Facebooku.

Do you know how to say 'I love you' like an elephant? If you don't, a new tool can tell you how.

Hello in Elephant, a project designed to raise awareness for African elephants, lets users translate phrases and emotions such as 'hello' and 'I'm sad' into a short clip showing the elephant gesture and noise equivalent.

Users can either click 'Translate your voice' and use their microphone to translate a spoken phrase into elephant language, or click' Translate text or emoji' and type a basic phrase or emoji.

After the user clicks 'translate,' the translator generates a video and showing the elephants gesture and noise.

The video can be shared via Facebook or Twitter, or sent via facebook message - and users are given the option to donate to the cause.

Even spotykamy też w wielu wyrażeniach.

The shipyard that changed humanity

Na stronie BBC w cyklu artykułów pod wspólnym tytułem Places That Changed The World znajdziemy tekst o stoczni gdańskiej.
In the old dockland area of Gdańsk, Poland, a fair walk from the attractive tourist hub of the Main Town, stands a striking, rust-brown building.
This is the European Solidarity Centre (ESC), opened in 2014. Its massive bulk and ochre-coloured panels give a hint of the former function of this location, as if a giant vessel has come aground in this former shipyard.What really caught my eye, however, is the older structure next to it: a sturdy set of metal gates attached to a blue guardhouse, with the words Stocznia Gdańska (Gdańsk Shipyard) in huge block letters above.

The Beatles' fifth official UK album release, Help! was the soundtrack to the group's second feature film. It contained 14 songs: 10 by Lennon-McCartney, two more by George Harrison, and a further two cover versions.The film had an early working title of Beatles II, until Eight Arms To Hold You was suggested. This was used for around three weeks in March and April 1965, and Capitol Records even announced that it would be the title of their first US single of the year.

The Museum of Toys and Play in Kielce, Poland

Muzeum Zabawek i Zabawy w Kielcach to bardzo miłe miejsce, które dostarczy atrakcji i przyjemności zarówno dzieciom jak i dorosłym. Sprawdziłam i polecam!

The Museum of Toys and Play is the biggest and the oldest museum of toys in Poland. On an exhibition area of six hundred thirty-one square metres there are presented a few thousands of exhibits. Visitors can see a multitude of exhibitions, among others, historical and folk toys, dolls from all over the world, model cars, aeroplanes, boats, railway models and theatrical dolls.

We endeavour to make the visiting of the museum unusual adventure for children, hence interactive exhibitions where young learners of the history of toys can not only watch but also touch the exhibits. During visiting the museum children have a chance to play both in a play area and, in summer, also in the courtyard of the museum.
