A "perfectly spherical" chicken egg has sold for an "unbelievable" £480 on the internet auction site eBay.

Kim Broughton found one of her hens - now renamed Ping Pong - had laid the round egg in her garden in Latchingdon, Essex, on 17 February - Pancake Day.
She decided to auction the egg in aid of the Cystic Fibrosis Trust after a friend's son died from the disease.
Ms Broughton, 44, said she imagined the buyer was interested in preserving, rather than eating, the unusual egg.
The item, laid by a Buff Orpington hen - described as the "Scarlett Johansson of the chicken world" - attracted 64 bids, but the identity of the winner is not yet known.

Ms Broughton said she had been tempted to cook and eat the egg before being told it was "one-in-a-billion".

Something new (młodsza Skoda Fabia).

Nigdy nie przepadałam za reklamami Skody, a niektóre wręcz mnie irytowały, na przykład : z lasu wypada niedźwiedź, kradnie kluczyki od Skody a potem puka do drzwi mieszkania kierowcy. Kupy się to wszystko nie trzymało.

Polish Your English.

Skusiłam się na zakup książki "Polish your English. Angielski z premierem" i nie żałuję.

Przyjemnie się czyta i można się dowiedzieć wielu ciekawych rzeczy. Książka zawiera 52 lekcje, które były publikowane na łamach Gazety Wyborczej, po tym, jak premier Tusk obiecał podszlifować swój angielski.
Czytam tylko kiedy mam ochotę i gdzie mi się otworzy i zawsze znajdę coś, co mnie zainteresuje.
Książka zawiera przydatne idiomy, słowa wytrychy, false friends i użyteczne zwroty, które umożliwią nam prowadzenie rozmowy bez stękania ( na przykład: zwroty gotowce o filmie, o polityce, o kolacji).
 Są tu też ciekawe artykuły o brytyjskiej kulturze i komiks o inspektorze brytyjskiej policji, który łapie przestępców dzięki znajomości angielskich idiomów. Z ogromnym zainteresowaniem przeczytałam tekst " Drwal w damskich ciuchach" ( o piosenkach Monty Pythona)  i  "Angielski od kuchni".
Zdobytą wiedzę możemy przetestować przy pomocy quizów. Możemy też sprawdzić nasze predyspozycje językowe rozwiązując test "Poliglota czy miernota?" Uzyskałam w nim niezły wynik. Co ciekawe poprawnie zrobiłam zadania, w których użyto kompletnie nieznanych mi języków, jak węgierski, turecki czy portugalski,a poległam na zadaniu z czeskim, bo wydawało mi się, że rozumiem.
Dla kogo jest ta książka? Dla osób dorosłych, które znają angielski w stopniu co najmniej średniozaawansowanym. Polecam!

How popcorn gets its pop.

Tajemnica popcornu, czyli prażonej kukurydzy, wyjaśniona naukowo.

The popping sound made by popcorn has baffled scientists for decades, remaining one of nature's major unsolved problems.

French researchers say they have finally settled the question of why popcorn pops through a series of high-speed camera observations, sound recordings and the theory of thermodynamics.

They also discovered that popcorn 'jumps' in the same way an animal does.'Popcorn bursts open, jumps and emits a 'pop' sound in some hundredths of a second,' the researchers wrote.

'The physical origin of these three observations remains unclear in the literature.' 

As the vapour is expelled, the cavity inside the kernel acts as an 'acoustic resonator' resulting in an audible pop.

" Autobus czerwony przez ulice mego miasta mknie..." śpiewano w Warszawie, ale to nie nasza stolica słynie z czerwonych autobusów.
8 lutego 1956 na targach w Londynie zaprezentowano "nowy autobus dla Londyńczyków". Piętrowy czerwony autobus AEC Routemaster, wyprodukowany w roku 1954 w Elstree w hrabstwie Hertfordshire, stał się wkrótce symbolem Londynu i Wielkiej Brytanii.
Autobus posiadał 64 miejsca siedzące, był ogrzewany, kabinę kierowcy odizolowano od wnętrza, a opłatę za przejazd pobierał konduktor, co skracało czas postoju na przystankach.
Pierwsze autobusy Routemaster zaczęły obsługiwać trasy w roku 1959.

School orders pupils to spend a week on 'digital detox'.

Tydzień cyfrowego detoxu zarządził dyrektor Old Hall School w Wellington, Shorpshire. Pozbawieni dostępu do urządzeń elektronicznych uczniowie mają wykorzystać ten czas miedzy innymi  na rozmowy i grę w karty.  
Szkoła, która kieruje pan Martin Stott nie pozwala także zabierać telefonów na wycieczki szkolne, co według mnie jest pomysłem dość kontrowersyjnym. Z jednej strony dobrze, bo może uczeń bardziej się zainteresuje otoczeniem, a z drugiej lepiej byłoby żeby miał jednak kontakt z rodzicami.

Martin Stott, head of the Old Hall School in Wellington, Shropshire, believes many youngsters are growing up unable to read people's body language or facial expressions because their eyes never leave mobile devices.

The dish sees spaghetti in a tomato-garlic sauce take the place of a patty. The noodles are mixed with pecorino cheese then coated in egg and baked in a blini pan to hold them together.

Spain ended the Men's Handball World Championship without managing to win what would have been their third medal in a row, losing in extra time by 29-28 to Poland, who therefore won the bronze medal after a poor game by the Spanish side, as the tough semi-final they'd played against France had evidently taken its toll.

In the game that no one really wants to play - the third place play-off - the Spanish team showed that they were not in very good shape for a match like this.

This was clear as they went behind quite early on and took quite some time to turn the game round. When in the end it was within their grasp, they threw it away.

Dziś w Irlandii i Szkocji obchodzony jest Dzień Świętej Brygidy wywodzący się z celtyckiego święta Imbolc ( wymawia się :  'im'olk') poświęconego Brigid - bogini wiosny, poezji lecznictwa i rzemiosła. Z dniem tym związane było także przepowiadanie pogody.
