Those sparkly, glowing orbs are back for a third year. The Oxford Street Christmas lights switch-on will see 1778 snowball-like decorations (and their 750,000 LED lightbulbs) lit up once again for what is the fifty-sixth year the road has been decorated for the festive period. In a subtle upgrade from last year's display, 445 new golden baubles will twinkle among the existing silver lights.

For the first time ever the switch-on event on Sunday November 1 will see West Oxford Street closed to traffic (2pm-6.30pm), with special offers available in many of the shops. Kylie Minogue will do the honours, and a stage outside the Pandora Marble Arch store will host live musical performances and celebrity presenters from 5.30pm – look out for Foxes, Fleur East, singer-songwriter Gabrielle Alpin, 'X-Factor' winner Ben Haenow and performers from 'Matilda the Musical'.

It's morning rush hour on the M4. Cars crowd around me, switching lanes and tailgating as their drivers hustle into London.

My electric Tesla Model S is different: it stays precisely in the middle of its lane, a good, safe distance from the car in front.

Strangely, my feet are flat on the floor. Stranger still, my hands are folded in my lap.

Spelling Bee

Spelling bee to konkursy ortograficzne polegające na literowaniu słów ( odpowiednik polskiego dyktanda).  Pomysł powstał w XIX wieku w USA i tam po raz pierwszy użyto tej nazwy. W 1925 roku zwycięzca krajowego etapu został zaproszony do Białego Domu i od tej pory kolejni amerykańscy prezydenci podtrzymuja tę tradycję.
Znaczenie nazwy konkursu nie jest do końca wyjaśnione.
Polecam wszystkim amerykański film z roku 2006 pod tytułem "Akeelah i jej nauczyciel" ( tytuł ang. "Akeelah and The Bee"). To poruszająca historia uczestniczki konkursu, którą powienien obowiązkowo obejrzeć każdy uczeń, nauczyciel i rodzic.

International Stuttering Awareness Day

Dzis ochodzimy Światowy Dzień Osób Jąkających się . Święto ustanowiono w 1998 roku, aby uwrażliwić społeczeństwo na problemy osób dotknietych tą przypadłością.

Since 1998, every year on October 22 we celebrate ISAD. Isn’t this an excellent joint project between ISA, IFA and ELSA? Haven’t we already accomplished a lot together?The self-help groups and the national associations become very active and creative when International Stuttering Awareness Day approaches. The Stuttering Homepage has been the home of ISAD online conferences on stuttering until 2012.  The International Stuttering Association has been running the online conference since 2013.There is big media coverage in many countries. People who stutter from self-help groups as well as professionals are interviewed for TV and newspapers. Excellent projects, interesting discussions and parties occur around the World around October 22. It is so gratifying to see how the national associations use this Day for working and celebrating.
