  • Monsanto, a US biotech company, patented new product earlier this year
  • Works its way into DNA and stops production of ethylene gas in plants
  • Ethylene prompts the ripening of fruit and shedding of petals on flowers
  • Could be a huge boost for florists, an industry with massive wastage
