Guinness Book of Records

27 sierpnia 1955 ukazało się pierwsze wydanie Księgi Rekordów Guinnessa. Nakład wyniósł 1000 egzemplarzy.

"On an unknown date in November 1951, Sir Hugh Beaver (1890-1967) was out shooting on Slob Hill, by the river Slaney in County Wexford in the south-east of Ireland. Some golden plovers were missed by the party. That evening at Castleford House it was realized that it was not possible to confirm in reference books whether or not the golden plover was Europe's fastest game bird. It occurred to Sir Hugh, managing director of the Guinness Breweries, that there must be numerous other questions debated nightly in the 81,400 pubs in Britain and in Ireland, but there was no book with which to settle arguments about records."

"On 12 September 1954, Sir Hugh invited Norris and Ross McWhirter to see if their fact and figure agency in London could help. An office was set up at 107 Fleet Street and intense work began on the first slim 198 page edition. The printers bound the first copy on 27 August 1955. Well before Christmas the Guinness Book was No. 1 on the bestsellers list."

Cruel cowbells.

Obrońcy praw zwierząt w Niemczech podejmują starania aby zakazać zakładania krowom dzwonków na szyję, bo ponoć ma to zły wpływ na krowią psychikę i wręcz doprowadza mućki do szaleństwa.
Zamiast dzwonka proponują GPS.

Animal rights activists in Germany are calling for an end to cowbells because they say they are cruel.

Cow bells tinkling across Alpine pastures is a common feature in the south of the country and farmers say essential for keeping track of their herds.

But the German Animal Protection Federation claims the bells send the animals 'mad' and that GPS trackers around their necks are more effective in the modern age.

John Lennon and a UFO.

Wieczorem 23 sierpnia 1974 roku John Lennon wyszedł na balkon i zobaczył dziwny kulisty obiekt nad Nowym Jorkiem, który uznał za UFO. Widok ten tak nim wstrząsnął, że na okładce albumu "Walls and Bridges,"nad którym właśnie pracował, umieścił informację:  "23 sierpnia 1974 widziałem UFO. J.L."
UFO widziała także towarzysząca mu wtedy asystentka, May Pang

Hot water with lemon might ruin your teeth

Przez lata różne autorytety namawiały do picia na dzień dobry szklanki gorącej wody z dodatkiem soku z cytryny, bo dobrze działa na trawienie i pomaga w odchudzaniu. Teraz dentyści straszą, że może to niszczyć zęby. I bądź tu mądry!

Professor Damien Walmsley, the British Dental Association’s scientific adviser, said a number of studies show the more acidic a drink is, the more it erodes the teeth.

He warned that lemon juice is particularly damaging, especially when combined with hot water.He told MailOnline: ‘Lemon juice, for example, has a pH of between 2 and 3 is therefore highly acidic.

‘The temperature of the water can exacerbate this effect because erosion is more severe at higher temperatures.

‘Studies also suggest that the incidence of this type of tooth wear, particularly among children and adolescents, is more prevalent than in the past.’

And Dr Nigel Carter, chief executive of the British Dental Health Foundation, agreed that lemon in hot water can cause tooth erosion.

Unhappy children

Przeprowadzone w piętnastu krajach badania poziomu szczęścia i zadowolenia z życia, ujawniły, że brytyjskie dzieci czują się nieszczęśliwe. W rankingu Wielka Brytania znalazła się na przedostatnim miejscu. Bardziej nieszczęśliwym można być tylko w Korei Południowej.
Badaniami objęto 53 tysiące dzieci w wieku od 8 do 12 lat. Najszczęśliwsze dzieci mieszkają w Rumunii, Kolumbii i Hiszpanii. Polska na 4 miejscu (od końca oczywiście).

The Children's Society called for a new law to provide counselling in schools.
Ministers said schools were encouraged to have counsellors available and all schools must have measures in place to tackle bullying.

The United Arab Emirates takes the lead in giving the toughest reviews, says Agoda.com.

The average review scores from UAE travelers were found to be .32 points lower than the global average of 8.52 out of 10.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, Russian travelers have been ranked the most generous hotel reviewers, with their scores found to be .56 points higher than the global average.

"Travelers from different countries tend to have different review rating standards depending on their travel patterns, spending power, and just general likes and dislikes," says John Brown, chief operating officer of Agoda.com.

Japanese and Omani travelers follow close behind the UAE in terms of dissatisfaction, while Egyptians and Irish are generally more satisfied with their hotels, ranking not far behind Russia, says Agoda.com.

Mirror mirror on the wall...

Czy lustra w przymierzalniach pokazują nam różne obrazy naszej sylwetki. Okazuje się, że tak.  Kobieta w błękitnej sukience odwiedziła kilka sklepów. W każdej przymierzalni wyglądała inaczej. Są sklepy, do których nie powinno się wchodzić...

Every woman knows from bitter experience the hell of the changing room. We’ve all been there. You find the perfect dress, try it on and it looks sublime. Flattering, fitting, fabulous. Then you get home and look in your own mirror and discover it’s actually a disaster.

Then there’s the other scenario. You find the perfect dress, try it on and you look like a sack of spuds, flee in tears and head straight for a tub of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream. Would the same dress look beautiful at home? You’ll never know.

Both situations can leave a woman in despair. Why is it that some changing room mirrors seem to take a dress size off you and others add two? I decided to find out.

Henry Hudson - the explorer.

2 sierpnia 1610 roku angielski żeglarz i odkrywca  Henry Hudson odkrył zatokę, która została nazwana jego imieniem. Zadaniem Hudsona było odnalezienie przejścia północno-zachodniego i północno wschodniego z Europy na Daleki Wschód. Celu nigdy nie osiągnął ale "przy okazji" dokonał wielkich odkryć. Urodził się w 1565 roku w Londynie ale data jego śmierci nie jest znana. Załoga, która miała już dość szalonych pomysłów i nie podzielała jego odkrywczych pasji, zbuntowała się i odpłynęła. do domu zostawiając Hudsona gdzieś  na brzegu..Podjęte przez Anglię poszukiwania nie przyniosły żadnych rezultatów.
