More than one in four dogs are depressed because they are lonely, a study has found.
Over 2.3million dogs are routinely left in solitude for five or more hours – despite vets advising four hours as the absolute limit, the research revealed.
And 465,000 pooches are never taken for a walk and as a result are at risk of mental health problems, according to the survey of 31,500 pet owners by vet charity PDSA.
Vets say a daily walk and meetings with other dogs are essential for the well-being of dogs, which are naturally sociable animals.
