Half a million lights set Christmas tree record

An Australian man has set a new world record for the most lights on an artificial Christmas tree.

David Richards illuminated the tree in Canberra, with a grand total of 518,838 twinkling lights.

The previous record of 378,280 bulbs was smashed by David Richards' 22m tree in the Australian capital of Canberra, which boasted 518,838 twinkling lights.

Representatives from Guinness World Records were on hand to confirm th record, previously held by Universal Studios in Osaka, Japan, had been broken.

Hundreds gathered under the city centre stunning festive display to await the news they wanted to hear.
